The happiest place on earth…Disneyland, right? Wrong! Recently, it was for this seventeen year old sportscaster-for-a-day in the broadcasting booth for a home game of the LA Sparks’ at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
I guess you could say the best rollercoaster of the day would be interviewing the new fame-finding rookies, coaches and legends. The parade down Main Street was sitting in on the pre-game media production meeting and backstage tours. The fireworks at the end of the day were seeing all of the hard work come together perfectly. Of course, we cannot forget the main attraction, Mr. Larry Burnett (voice of the WNBA’s LA Sparks’ and YSN Sports Broadcasting Academy faculty member), who was The Mickey Mouse of Disneyland and the star that we all looked up to.
This experience that I got only could have come from graduating YSN Sports Broadcasting Academy. The day I spent job-shadowing Larry Burnett, was one of the most exciting days of my life. I learned hands on, personal details on interviewing, broadcasting, poise, and real life experiences you cannot get anywhere else. Improv, I found was a major part of the job, along with preparation. When it comes down to it, your job is not work if it is truly what you love. Meeting players like Nneka Ogwumike and D. Milton-Jones, and a broadcaster like Larry Burnett, was a once in a lifetime experience that I was lucky enough to achieve through the academy. I learned so much! I know that what I want to do is I what I love do and someday, this will be me somebody is writing about.
